Slow down to speed up.

You'd be surprised how often I have to tell students in my weight-loss programs to slow down when they eat, which is absolutely critical if we're going to be successful in not only losing body fat quickly but actually keeping it off once it's gone.

By slowing down the pace at which you take bites, you do two main things for your body:

First, you're giving your digestive system time to react, process, and break-down each portion of food you swallow. Much like that traffic jam you may face on the way to work, your stomach can quickly get overloaded from packing down too much food in too short of a time at major meals. This leads to excess, which leads to fat storage instead of digestion! Losing body fat is often just about giving yourself time to let your body do what it does naturally, without overwhelming it.

Second, you're outrunning your brain. What this means is that your brain automatically starts a countdown timer from the second you put that first piece of food into your mouth. The timer is for the release of a hormone in your bloodstream that tells you "I'm full" and makes you feel satisfied.

The problem today is that we're eating so quickly that the hormone production timer doesn't get a chance to go off and tell us we're full until we've already swallowed 600, 800, or even 1000 calories worth of food! No matter what diet or food plan you're on, if you're racing through meals you're not losing body fat.

Tonight at dinner I want you to time yourself how long it takes you to finish the meal from when you pick up your fork or spoon to the time you push yourself away from the table. If that time is LESS than 15 minutes, you're eating much too quickly. A quick tip to slow down the pace is to count bites, meaning as you chew run a little counter in your head that makes you get to at least 10 chews before swallowing.
